Art Paper vs Matte Paper: Which One Should You Choose?

Art Paper vs Matte Paper: Which One Should You Choose?

Choosing the wrong paper can ruin an otherwise perfect print job. Here is a clear, simple breakdown of art paper vs matte paper and when to use each one.

One of the most common questions we receive at ESTOB Prints is this: what is the difference between art paper and matte paper? It seems like a small detail but choosing the wrong paper can significantly affect how your final print looks, feels, and communicates to your audience.

This guide breaks it down simply so you can make the right choice every time.

What Is Art Paper?

Art paper also called glossy paper has a shiny, coated surface that reflects light. This reflective quality makes colours appear more vibrant and images look sharper and more detailed. Art paper is the finish you see on magazine covers, product catalogues, and high impact flyers.

Art paper works best for product catalogues and lookbooks, marketing flyers and promotional materials, brochures where visual impact is the priority, posters and large format print, and any material where you want colours to feel bold and vivid.

The one tradeoff with art paper is that the glossy surface can show fingerprints and smudges easily. It is also harder to write on, which makes it less suitable for materials your audience needs to annotate or fill in.

What Is Matte Paper?

Matte paper has a smooth, non reflective finish. It does not shine or reflect light, which gives it a calmer, more sophisticated appearance. Many people describe matte paper as feeling more premium in the hand. There is a tactile quality to it that glossy paper does not replicate.

Matte paper works best for business cards and corporate stationery, high end brochures and company profiles, books, reports, and annual reviews, presentation folders, and any material that will be read for a long time or handled repeatedly.

The advantage of matte paper is that it is comfortable on the eyes for extended reading and does not attract fingerprints the way glossy paper does. It also takes pen and pencil marks well, making it ideal for materials that need to be filled in or annotated.

Which One Should You Choose?

The simplest way to decide is to ask yourself one question: Is this material meant to impress visually, or is it meant to be read and used?

If your print material is primarily a visual showcase such as a product flyer, a catalogue, or a poster, art paper will make your images and colours pop.

If your print material is primarily a document or reference such as a business card, a company profile, a corporate brochure, or a report, matte paper will feel more professional and be more comfortable to read and handle.

What About Paper Weight?

Paper weight matters just as much as finish. Both art paper and matte paper come in a range of weights measured in grams per square metre. As a general guide, 90 to 115gsm is standard weight suitable for flyers and internal documents. 130 to 170gsm is medium weight good for brochures and marketing materials. 200 to 300gsm is heavyweight ideal for business cards, covers, and premium stationery. 350gsm and above is board weight used for packaging and premium cards.
